It's soothing being in motion, headed somewhere. I like watching the people we pass who also can't sleep. I like the noises, the screech as the bus lurches to a stop, the door letting out like a gasp.

In winter it was white, in the springtime blonde, in summer still blonde but with flower buds in June that rose into tulips by July and sank to daisies come August. Adult Swim in the Kidney Pool
The hair on his head is gone, but his eyebrows still inch across his face like two black caterpillars playing a polite game of chicken. His body may be down for the count, but his face still has it going on. Each day of the week there’s a different colored cap on his head, and I’m proud to say I crocheted each one. Crocheting is a recent conquest for me, one that did not come easily, since my fingers are short and blunt and often feel more like stubby tan pencils than those sensitive personal tools some other women own.

Teeth
The sun is bright and hazy and hot, so this young couple decides to put their feet in the water. The water is warm, so they wade farther in. Past the shells and the gritty froth of the breaking waves, the sand is soft and slick between their toes, like velvet.
