submissions

Submissions are open! Keep reading for details, then follow the link at the bottom to our Submishmash page.

Blog. To pitch an idea for a blog post (which could mean a book review, an interview, a column, or anything lit-related), or if you are a small press / lit mag and would like your book / issue reviewed, contact Ryan.

There Will Be Words. Submit fiction and nonfiction up to 1,500 words to read aloud at our monthly prose reading series at Urban ReThink, hosted by J. Bradley. TWBW has its own website and Submishmash.

What we’re looking for. Long, short stories (~7,500 to 15,000 words) ; collections of 5 of your best short stories (not flash fiction) as a preview of your larger collection; novellas (~15,000 to 40,000 words). We’re also open to strange ideas, but please query first.

Submission Format. Include contact info, story title and word count. 12-point, serif fonts are best. Double-spacing helps us, too. You probably know the drill. We’re not all that strict. Just don’t try anything funny.

Content. It might be simplest to say we’re looking for literary fiction and creative nonfiction. Though definitions of this tend to vary, we are not looking for anything genre-heavy, as in sci-fi, romance, mystery. The typical MFA story––where developed character A undergoes conflict B and eventually reaches resolution C, perhaps with a nice objective correlative of boughs swaying in the cold breeze to close––is not going to be dismissed outright, but is at a slight disadvantage unless it grabs us from the first paragraph. We like to be both challenged and entertained. We are not above humor and satire. We realize this sounds vague and maybe even a bit dickish, and that if we keep rambling we’ll eventually contradict ourselves, so… please send us your best work.

Simultaneous Submissions. Are okay with us.  Just let us know in your cover letter, or on the first page of the submission, and please email us ASAP (with your name, title of story, and approximate date of submission) if your work is accepted elsewhere.

Submit via Submishmash. We will not read submissions sent via e-mail or snail mail. If you do not have a Submishmash account, it only takes a minute to create one. Click the link below to submit.

Thank you. Seriously.  Thank you for submitting to Burrow Press.  We read every submission carefully and appreciate you showing us your work.
