“Brucey?” I say to my beautiful eldest daughter, Molly. The music’s caving in my head, but it’s my era so I guess I love it.  Grace Slick, “Somebody to Love.” There are tall tables in this section, and we’re sitting across from one another. Molly’s a wreck. She’s been crying. We’re waiting for her sister, who gets off at eleven if she doesn’t have to close. “Brucey?”

Phil Deaver writes and publishes in three genres — fiction, nonfiction and poetry. One hundred and forty years ago this coming October, he won the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction. That book, Silent Retreats, will be available on Kindle in the next few days. He is professor of English and Writer in Residence at Rollins College and teaches both poetry and fiction in the Spalding University brief residency MFA program.
