WE CAN’T HELP IT IF WE’RE FROM FLOIRIDA
ed. Shane Hinton

Florida is more than just fodder for hard-boiled crime novels and zany farces. This anthology of new stories and essays challenges a star-studded line up of current and former Floridians to write about the state through a literary lens, though not without the requisite weirdness. The Florida within this book contains: lightning, oil spills, road rage, a lizard tied to a balloon, swimmers, sleepwalkers, characters that love Florida, characters that hate Florida, and at least three sinkholes. Featuring new writing by Lidia Yuknavitch, Sarah Gerard, Kristen Arnett, Laura van den Berg, Lindsay Hunter, John Brandon, Jaquira Díaz, Alissa Nutting and many more.

PRAISE FOR WE CAN’T HELP IT…

“A heartfelt, complex counter to all those #FloridaMan jokes.”
–KIRKUS REVIEWS

“We Can’t Help It If We’re From Florida is as hot and wild and dangerous as our beloved (or is it bedeviled?) state, itself. While no book could ever fully explain the mysteries of today’s Sunshine State, this smart chorus of varied and brilliant voices comes as close as any I’ve read.”
–LAUREN GROFF author of Fates & Furies

“A geographic mixtape that spans the Panhandle to Key West, here is that uniquely Floridian madness as seen from the eye of the hurricane. Thank God, here’s something Florida can feel proud to have produced. New work that’s as weird and funny and beautiful and unnerving as you might expect from some of our state’s best writers. Whether you grew up on the Gulf or are still repressing a lost weekend in Daytona, you’ll nd plenty to enjoy here.”
–KAREN RUSSELL author of Swamplandia!

“Florida can kill you at any time, and in the 20 stories, poems, and essays that follow, we see exactly how: ominous clouds ‘like tight bruised fists, ‘ lightning strikes that could contribute to a ‘Floridian way to die, ‘ and even brain-eating amoeba.”
–NICK MORAN for The Millions

“Vivid scenes in each piece provide both nostalgic and newly discovered images of Florida’s landscape and culture.”
–FOREWORD REVIEWS
